Scenic Vistas

Favorite places to see what makes the city’s environment special. Many are lesser-known spots suggested by local inhabitants.

Star Gazing Sites

Dark vantage points that allow unobstructed views of the night sky. May also include planetariums or observatories and best locations for Southern Aurora, meteors, etc.

Public Forests/ Groves

Publicly owned and accessible to all. A wide variety of natural areas can use this symbol. Emphasis of forests with parklands aimed at discouraging the over-use of natural areas.

Special Trees

Trees that have historical importance or are especially beautiful, large, old, or rare. May be old growth, virgin trees (never cut by humans), ancient, sacred, or medicinal trees or native plants. Could be indoors.

City Parks

Green open spaces within city limits that offer places to relax and play, often within a human-planted forest. May include sports fields, running paths, or children's play equipment, along with vegetation and a pond, a creek, or other water feature. Some parkland maybe publicly owned and free, others might be private and charge admission.

Spring Blossoms

Blossoms are especially beautiful and bountiful in this area, especially at springtime.

Bird & Wildlife Watching

These are officially recognized, habitat-rich sites and locally known sites where a variety of birds can be seen all year. Includes areas to view migratory birds in season. It is recommended to visit these sites during early-morning or afternoon. Also includes sites where animals can be seen in the wild. Sites may be delicate nesting areas or habitats; visitors must approach with care and understanding.***(The ‘Bird & Wildlife Watching sub-category now incorporates the old ‘Amphibian Habitat’ sub-category. Here is it’s old description, which must be incorporated into ‘Bird &’) Wet habitats that are typical viewing sites for frogs, newts, and other amphibious creatures, which are indicators of a pond or wetlands' health status. Habitats surrounding Jerusalem include springs, brooks, dams, and winter puddles. Habitats have special water vegetation and many animals, such as insects and amphibians that are dependent on the water sources.

Natural Corridor/ Greenway

Generally, places where interconnections between natural and built environments are evident. Green ways often follow river or streambeds, ravines, or steep hills and are left in natural state (more or less). This icon may indicate a wildlife corridor for ground-based animals, with native plants to shelter them.

Water Sites

Could be a beautiful fountain, waterfalls, a natural pond, or spring. May simply celebrate water or offer a refreshing drink. May be ecologically designed.

Open Spaces

Open, natural area within an urban setting or in the developed country side.

Eco-Tour/Nature Walks

Specially designed and recommended trail or path taking in unique urban nature sites throughout the city.

Sports Sites/ Play with Nature

Location designed for indoor or outdoor fitness and playing sports of all kinds. Includes pools, gyms, sports fields, and tennis courts. Many places could charge admissions. Best used for sites with minimal eco-impacts.

Dog Run

Designated places where dogs can be taken off their leashes, usually in city parks. Often the only place you can see animals romping and frolicking in dense cities.
